COVID-19 timeline

Jan. 25, 2020: A man in his 50s who arrived in Toronto from Wuhan, China, the epicentre of the outbreak, becomes the first “presumptive”case of the new coronavirus in Canada.

March 5, 2020: B.C. announced eight new cases, including Canada’s first-ever case of community transmission (rather than through travel or contact with other cases).

March 11, 2020: the World Health Organization (WHO), declared COVID-10 a pandemic.

March 13, 2020: Chief Medical Officer of Health David Williams sent out a memo
to long-term care homes strongly recommending that homes only allow
“essential” visitors until further notice. Essential visitors are defined as those who have a resident who is dying or very ill.

March 17, 2020: Ontario Enacts Declaration of Emergency to Protect the Public

March 19, 2020: Emergency funding announced for long-term care homes

March 23, 2020: First death of long-term care home resident reported.
