Our Family Council is a group of family members and friends of residents in a long term care home that meet on a regular basis. The main purpose of our Family Councils is to improve the quality of life of residents and give families a voice in decisions that affect them and their loved ones in the Home. Objectives vary depending upon the interests of the residents and council members and administrative staff. Some examples: • Support for families: • Education and information: Wards Funeral Home presentation Alzheimer’s presentation “I’m Still Here” Shoppers Drug Mart (Medi System) Palliative Care Living Wills & Estates DNR Dental Hygiene Services Chiropodist (Feet) • Discussion and action on concerns: Assist Residents Council as requested Food Painting of floors Cleaning of walkers & wheelchairs Staff education • Vital Stakeholder: in protecting the interests of the residents in actively advocating for the improvement of the residents’ quality of life monitoring health and safety standards and practices within the home • Sponsor activities for residents: Fund Raisers o Gift and Bake sales 2 x a year o Cook Book (new) Alia, Tan Jay and Marks fashion shows 2x a year Smile Theater Concert nights on the big screen Remembrance Day (Poppies and handout to each resident) Canada Day (Pins to each resident) Christmas Tree & floor decorating (each floor) Christmas gift for each resident
