Our Family Council is a group of family members and friends of residents in a long term care home that meet on a regular basis. The main purpose of our Family Councils is to improve the quality of life of residents and give families a voice in decisions that affect them and their loved ones in the Home. Objectives vary depending upon the interests of the residents and council members and administrative staff. Some examples: • Support for families: • Education and information:  Wards Funeral Home presentation  Alzheimer’s presentation “I’m Still Here”  Shoppers Drug Mart (Medi System)  Palliative Care  Living Wills & Estates  DNR  Dental Hygiene Services  Chiropodist (Feet) • Discussion and action on concerns:  Assist Residents Council as requested Food Painting of floors Cleaning of walkers & wheelchairs Staff education • Vital Stakeholder:  in protecting the interests of the residents  in actively advocating for the improvement of the residents’ quality of life  monitoring health and safety standards and practices within the home • Sponsor activities for residents:  Fund Raisers o Gift and Bake sales 2 x a year o Cook Book (new)  Alia, Tan Jay and Marks fashion shows 2x a year  Smile Theater  Concert nights on the big screen  Remembrance Day (Poppies and handout to each resident)  Canada Day (Pins to each resident)  Christmas Tree & floor decorating (each floor)  Christmas gift for each resident
