October is 'Understand the Act' Month!
by Family Councils Ontario
October is 'Understand the Act' Month! All this month we'll be publishing content to help your Council better understand the Long-Term Care Homes Act. Our Blog will feature a series of posts on the Act and we're holding a FREE WEBINAR on the Long-Term Care Homes Act to help you learn more!
Understanding the sections of the Act that pertain to Family Councils is essential in understanding the context in which Family Councils operate. The Act includes important information on the powers of a Family Council, the duties of the Home in relation to the Council, membership, aspects of the Home the Council must be informed about or involved in, interference, and more.
There are a few key points to remember. First, the Family Council powers outlined in the Act are given to a Family Council by law; they are not awarded to you by the administrator, staff, Board or organization. Second, as part of the Resident Quality Inspection, there is a Family Council Interview conducted to determine if the Home is in compliance with the Family Council aspects of the legislation. The inspector is NOT inspecting the Family Council. Third, there are additional aspects of the Home that the Family Council is to be advised of or involved in, including drafting the Home's Mission Statement and annual Satisfaction Survey. Lastly, having a strong understanding of the legislation as it pertains to Family Councils will go a long way in supporting your Council's success. Stay tuned all this month for more information on the Long-Term Care Homes Act and Family Councils.
